Elite Opinion On Movies: Diablo

So word broke yesterday that a movie studio called Legendary Pictures is going to be making the classic PC game Diablo into a live action movie.

This is kind of a big deal for anyone who's played a video game in the last 90 years.

Diablo was to PC Role Playing Games what Tiger Woods was to Golf: they were both titanic fan-luring demi-gods that demanded the attention and adoration of the planet by breaking all of the rules and making it look really goddamn easy. Diablo traded the polarizing Dungeons and Dragons Role-Playing model for a stripped-down Hack and Slash approach to fantasy gaming, much the same way that Tiger Woods refused to play by the PGA's traditional guidelines when he fought Shooter McGavin for the tournament's prize and to save his billion year old grandmother's house.

You know how brothers do.

Woods using the nasty slap-shot he mastered in Ice Hockey to PWN his enemies.

Here's more on the film:

"Production company Legendary Pictures will be handling development of an upcoming film based on Blizzard's Diablo series of action RPGs. Indication of the studio's involvement came with the listing of Diablo in the "Coming Soon" section of the official Legendary Pictures site.

The news partially confirms a story last month by the Hollywood Reporter, which noted in passing Legendary's connection to the Diablo film and stated that the screenplay will be scribed by Gary Whitta, whom longtime gamers may remember as the first editor of PC Gamer. Whitta also wrote the series of graphic novels based on Backbone Entertainment's Death Jr. game franchise, and contributed to the scripts of Epic Games' Gears of War, Human Head's Prey, and 3D Realms' upcoming Duke Nukem Forever."
